Decluttering Your Home

Your home, your sanctuary. Your home, your zen space. It is the safe place you can return to after a long day of battling all sorts of energies at work, in school, during your ride to and from your destination. It is the place where you can exhale your frustrations and exhaustion, right by the door, before you enter and breathe in tranquility, peace and calmness.

But when your home is littered with knick knacks, junk and whatnots, then the positive energy slowly becomes negatively charged. Instead of absorbing the tranquil, calming and  recharging energy of the home, the cluttered surroundings disturbs the natural flow of chi and makes it distracting and unappealing.

Over time, all sorts of things are brought into the home as groceries, gifts, deliveries, take-home food, and the like. Some of them are just tossed on the table or stuffed into the cabinet, drawers or pantry shelves. They become clutter.

On a regular basis, home decluttering must be done. This is an important task to do in order to sort out what is needed in the home and what is not. With decluttering, spaces are cleared out, trash is thrown away, paper and plastic are recycled, unused clothes are donated or given away. How do we get started?

SCHEDULE A DECLUTTER DAY

It is important that you schedule your decluttering beforehand. This gives you the chance to prepare yourself for the task physically, mentally and emotionally.

Decluttering will demand physical strength as you lift and move things around the home. It is mentally draining due to the fact that you will have to analyze and decide which items are to keep and which ones will be tossed. Saying goodbye to memorabilia from the past is extremely emotional and difficult but necessary for a new beginning.

BOXES, BOXES, BOXES

Big boxes, big containers and big bags are needed for this chore. Boxes are used to sort out your items. Label each of them as: recycling, donations, giveaways, yard sale, resale, or garbage. This will help you remember which pile is which. Seeing the pile of disposable items will make you feel accomplished.

ONE AT A TIME

You may feel overwhelmed with the thought of decluttering the entire house. Slow down. You do not have to do everything in one day. Go room-by-room. Start with the smallest room or the room with the least amount of clutter and work yourself up. Finishing one room will give you a sense of accomplishment and will give you a sense of fulfillment.

MAKE A MANTRA

Mantras are sacred utterances that are said repeatedly. Choose phrases that will help you decide whether to keep or discard an item. One can be: “Do I love it, like it, use it?” For clothing it can be simple as “Do I wear it or not?” Make sure the words you put in your mantra will help you make the best decisions.

NO FUTURE

The future is unclear so if you have kept anything in your cabinet, pantry, shelves or closets for “future” use and you have not used in the past month, toss it. If you have not used it in a while, you will not use it again. Clear out anything not used or anything that you do not love.

CLEAN AFTER DECLUTTER

Right after decluttering each drawer, shelf, cabinet or closet, clean them. Wipe off the dust and dirt before putting things back inside. This will give your drawers, shelves, cabinets and closets a fresh start too.

AFFIRM

Reassure yourself. When it comes to a point where you begin to question your choices, affirm to yourself. Tell yourself that it is safe to let go. Say “you are doing just fine” to yourself when you are wavering or say “We’re getting there!” when you feel like quitting. Be your own cheering squad. This way, you keep energy up and your spirits excited.

REMEMBER YOUR GOAL

Why declutter? Why am I doing this? Keep yourself in the game. Remember that you are doing this to make space for family quality time. Remember that you are removing all the broken and old items to make space for new ones. Remember that you are doing this to bring back the zen space, the sanctuary, the safe place for you, your family and the people you invite over.

Decluttering your home may take some time, but with patience and perseverance, you will get there. And remember, decluttering your home will harness in and welcome the reward of serenity, positivity, prosperity, and success back into your home and into your life.
